Aug 9th - 17th

In late summer each year, Resurrection Bay fills with tens of thousands of Silver Salmon and the city of Seward and the Conference and Visitors Bureau prepare for the Silver Salmon Derby held in August.

One of the oldest and largest fishing derbies in the State, Seward’s Derby is equally popular with locals, other Alaska residents, and visiting anglers from around the nation and world.

Entrants simply purchase a daily or season Derby ticket, and may enter their fish caught from shore or from a boat. For anglers with a boat, Seward provides two boat launch areas located at the harbor. For our boat-less visitors, try one of the dozens of professional charter services available for hire for half day or full day excursions.

DERBY NEWS

The Salmon Derby Committee has reduced entry fees for the 2008 Derby back to 2005 rates!

Three years ago, the Seward Chamber unveiled a brand new Derby Headquarters building to meet City code requirements.  A sizeable expense for such a small Chamber, Derby participants since then have helped pay for the new building through a small surcharge on each entry ticket.  The price for a Derby ticket was raised by $2 and daily tickets by $1.  Thank you to the ticket vendors who stocked all those $1 bills for change and volunteers who took the time to explain the fees to participants.

With most other prices on the rise – placing a great demand on our resident and visiting anglers, the Chamber’s Board of Directors believes that it is time to remove this surcharge from the tickets.  While the building is not yet paid off, Chamber staff believe they are close to meeting this goal, and thank all of the Salmon Derby participants over the past two years for helping them get this close.
